TRA FORCOLE E REMI – Omaggio a Giuseppe Carli

Mostra fotografica Venezia

ENG – These photos of the workshop owned by the famous oar maker Giuseppe Carli, were taken exactly forty years ago. Until now, only three of the pictures had ever been published; the others are finally on display for the first time here.Since the photos were taken, the types of commercial activities and shops found in Venice have changed significantly, and the population has dramatically decreased. The photographer, Manfredo Manfroi, felt that it was important to celebrate Carli’s legendary work in oar making. Historically, his standards in the craft have long been a reference point for both amateurs and professionals of ‘la voga alla veneta’ (Venetian rowing). In contrast with the eventual fate of similar workshops, Carli’s shop did not close down in the wake of its owner’s death; it is now run by the skilful hands of Paolo Brandolisio.

The documentation of Carli’s work started by chance: Manfroi was cruising along the inner canals of the Castello district when he chanced upon Carli’s workshop overlooking a canal. He was invited to enter, and discovered one of the most original  and yet quintessentially Venetian places in town.

The fantastic quality of the shots was facilitated by the naturally dramatic light that flowed from the large skylight (it was noon). This enabled the author to take flash-less photographs capturing the striking contrast of light and darkness which fell across Carli’s extraordinary ensemble of the tools, handmade products and artefacts.

Manfroi’s creative vision and technical expertise add a fairy-tale tone to the documentary purpose of these black and white images, complementing the magic of Giuseppe Carli’s extraordinary immersion in his craft.  This exhibition aims to be a homage to the memory of a great artisan and a document of a tradition that will hopefully live for ever.

So it is with great pleasure that Confartigianato Venezia invites all its members and the Venetian citizens to take a look at this photographic journey at the La Salizada art gallery (San Marco – San Samuele 3448), from October 12th to November 3rd 2018
